A coroner says a North Canterbury children's playground wasn't fit for purpose when a baby fell to her death

A coroner's report in the death of Waipara one-year-old Savanah Halcrow last year has just been released.
Savanah fell from a bridge at the Glenmark Playcentre as her mum set up for her first birthday party - suffering a traumatic brain injury.
Coroner Sue Johnson says the bark under the play area wasn't deep enough - and gaps in the bridge's guard rails should've had infill to prevent small children falling through.
Despite this - and requests from Savanah's parents - Johnson decided not to recommend new standards for flooring under playgrounds.
She says parents should be ultimately responsible for monitoring their toddlers.
