It's been an eventful morning for the Olympic champions at the 49er sailing world championships in Auckland

Kiwis Peter Burling and Blair Tuke suffered a DNF in the penultimate gold fleet race, after a tillar extension broke.

Following some quick repairs, they then finished third in the final fleet race, to take an eight point lead into this afternoon's double points medal race ahead of German pair Erik Heil and Thomas Ploessel.

Logan Dunning-Beck and Oscar Gunn will be the other New Zealanders in the decider.

However with poor weather forecast, the city of sails, could well become the city of storms.
