A Corrections spokesperson confirmed Mikus died on Friday, in the medical unit at Rimutaka Prison, near Wellington.
The Herald revealed he was gravely ill in September.
Mikus was a suspect early in the investigation, but his alibi wasn't challenged and he wasn't arrested for the crime for 15 years.
He was finally arrested in 2002 on DNA evidence - for abducting, raping and murdering the six-year-old.
He was sentenced to life in prison.
A Parole Board spokesperson says Mikus - who was denied parole five times - never applied for compassionate release.
