16 December 2019
The incident happened in 2016 when Nicho Caleb Frater was caring for baby Bella Richardson at her mother's home.
In what Frater's lawyer describes as a 'momentary loss of control', Frater picked up Bella and threw her, causing a brain and spinal cord haemorrhage.
Frater pleaded guilty to manslaughter in October, after previously denying a murder charge.
The Crown told the High Court in Whanganui the incident happened when Frater was "coming down" from methamphetamine.
Frater had 39 previous convictions and had served multiple jail terms.
