NIWA's 2019 Annual Climate Summary shows the year was New Zealand's fourth warmest on record.
Annual temperatures were point five to one point two degrees above average.
While yearly rainfall in 2019 was above average in western Southland and parts of Westland, other parts suffered.
Large areas of the country like Northland, Auckland and the Bay of Plenty only had 50 to 80 per cent of their usual rainfall.
