Wild wind and heavy rain are on the way for the South Island

A huge front is expected to roll up the country on Saturday - breaking up before it reaches the North Island on Sunday.

MetService has issued a heavy rain warning for Westland around Franz Josef - with a high risk of flooding and slips.

Rain warnings are also in place for Canterbury lakes and rivers south of Rakaia, Otago lakes and rivers, and Fiordland.
