56-year-old Rodney Day has been given seven months home detention and 150 hours community work in the Christchurch District Court - after pleading guilty.
Peter Adolph - who was in court today - says he hired Day to make alterations to his Harewood home - but instead he made off with the deposit.
Adolph says Day was smooth and amiable - but he's ripped off people.
He says he's disappointed with the sentence.
