A new telecommunications cable is about to be laid across Cook Strait

A new telecommunications cable is about to be laid across Cook Strait

The new cabling will be sturdier and heavier than the previous cables, in order to counter the area's strong tidal movement.

The specialised ship, the Reliance, is expected to arrive in Wellington at the end of the week, with work lasting around a month.
