The trial will see a Police officer, paramedic and a mental health professional respond in a team to mental health emergency calls in Wellington.
Police minister Stuart Nash says it aims to reduce the number of mental health patients being taken to hospital emergency departments by Police and ambulance crew.
He says almost two-thirds of people in Wellington taken to emergency departments in mental health distress were discharged.
