A car has crashed into a Wellington home this morning, causing serious injuries and a gas leak in the area

Cordons have been placed around Miramar's Byron Street after the incident about 8am.

Locals have been asked to avoid the area while emergency services are on the scene.

Police say the gas authority is on site, but the leak was not thought to be a threat to anyone's safety.

A Wellington Free Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed the driver is in hospital in a serious condition.
