Police say they signalled a vehicle for a routine stop in Te Anau about half past nine, but the 51-year-old driver fled.
Police pursued the man's car for more than half an hour - before it hit spikes and the man ran off on foot.
Dog handlers and an Armed Offender Squad flown in from Invercargill are searching for the man
They're asking locals to call police if they see a man they don't recognise on their property.
