Officers tried to pull over a vehicle for a routine stop in Te Anau around 9.30 yesterday morning - but the driver took off.
He's believed to be 51-year-old local David Wilson.
Police pursued his car for more than half an hour - before it hit spikes and he fled on foot.
They're asking the public to call them with any sightings, but urge people not to approach him - as it's believed he's armed.
