Motor vehicle and part retailers sale values fell the hardest of the 15 retail industries, down 248 million dollars.
It's followed by two hospitality industries - with food and beverage services down 179 million - and accommodation with a fall of 127 million.
Retail statistics manager Kathy Hicks says this is the largest drop in eight years.
She says these falls could continue into June, with a record decline in electronic card sales already reported for April.
