Gatland slotted the 78th minute winner to earn a 28-27 win in a pulsating game in Dunedin, with the home side scoring three tries to two.
He suffered a serious foot injury last year and has been sidelined since, and was not originally required in the 23 before Josh Ioane was ruled out with a groin injury.
