A rolling earthquake in the lower South Island has rocked residents in Dunedin, Queenstown and Wanaka

A rolling earthquake in the lower South Island has rocked residents in Dunedin, Queenstown and Wanaka

The 5.9 magnitude quake struck at a shallow five kilometres, 35 kilometres west of Milford Sound's coast at about 10.20am.

GeoNet Seismologist Muriel Naguit says there's been a recent increase in quakes nationwide.

She says we're one of the world's most seismically active countries - so we can expect to have some shaking.
