The 'suspected' covid-19 case definition has been dropped -- meaning not everyone with cold symptoms needs to be tested.
Dr Ashley Bloomfield says it's about prioritising those at higher risk of having the virus.
Epidemiologist Professor Nick Wilson from Otago University says the situation has evolved.
He says it's extremely unlikely there's any community spread -- and GPs are now getting a deluge of typical winter illnesses.
