16-year-old Daniel Cameron has been sent to jail for life - with a minimum non-parole period of 11 years - at the High Court in Invercargill today.
Detective Sergeant Mark McCloy says investigating the case took a huge toll on those involved.
But he says Hunter's family have shown remarkable strength in the face of incredible tragedy.
A family spokesperson says Hunter will be greatly missed.
They say no punishment will let them see his beautiful smile again - and they're still waiting for an explanation why this happened.
