The now 16-year-old Daniel Cameron has been jailed for life - with a minimum non-parole period of 11 years - after stabbing Hunter MacIntosh to death.
The boy's mother found his body on his bedroom floor in their Otautau home late last October.
Canterbury University criminology professor Greg Newbold says for a dangerous kid who needs rehabilitation - prison isn't a bad place to be.
He says the Justice system will offer Cameron all the support it can - and he should make the most of the opportunity.
