MetService is forecasting a period of heavy rain to move across from the west overnight tonight.
Watches and Warnings are now in force for western parts of the lower South Island, including the headwaters of the South Canterbury and Otago lakes and rivers.
Warnings are also out for areas south of Harihari, as the downpours could cause many streams and rivers to rise quickly.
MetService is advising motorists to keep an eye out for any surface flooding or slips.
