Forty-year-old Saunoa Vaigafa was charged with attempted murder after the late-night attack in Timaru bin May.
Through a Samoan translator - Vaigafa today pleaded guilty in the High Court in Christchurch to one charge of attempted murder.
The summary of facts shows Vaigafa chased his victim down the driveway with a kitchen knife.
He then stabbed her four times in the back and shoulders - the pair struggling until police arrived at the scene.
Vaigafa's been remanded in custody until sentencing in October.
