Researchers quoted in a Medical Journal study, have found that more than 93-thousand Kiwis have chronic Hepatitis B despite vaccinations introduced to babies 30 years ago.
Auckland University medical Professor Edward Gane says many of them will die or need transplants for liver cancer or liver failure.
He says the disease is the leading cause of liver cancer and liver-related deaths.
Gane says Maori and Pacific Islanders have the highest rates and receive the least diagnosis or after-care.
