Strong winds buffeting the area have fanned flames with 14 helicopters and two aircraft working to contain the blaze.
Police are evacuating those living in houses in the path of the fire.
A Fire and Emergency spokesman says it hasn't been contained yet.
He says winds are forecast to pick up this evening and fire crews are working with other agencies to move people out from Mt Cook village.
The fire emerged from a Twizel riverbed to spread into a large forest area off Mt Cook Rd/State Highway 80, about 11.25 this morning.
The fight for one property has been abandoned.
