Crews and 14 helicopters and two aircraft have been stood down until daybreak.
Police have evacuated residents from homes on State Highway 80, the Aoraki Mount Cook Road, which is closed because of smoke.
Strong nor-west winds have hampered attempts to control the fire and those conditions are forecast to continue overnight.
There is no current threat to either Twizel or Mt Cook townships.
