Renewed calls for machine guarding after a Wairarapa sawmill worker was fatally mangled by machinery

Renewed calls for machine guarding after a Wairarapa sawmill worker was fatally mangled by machinery

The worker was attempting to fix a timber grading and sorting machine in November 2018, when it restarted and she was pulled into the machine's sprockets.

The company, Kiwi Lumber, has been ordered to pay a 350 thousand dollar fine, and 263-thousand dollars in reparation to the victim's family.

WorkSafe Chief Inspector Steve Kelly says if the machine had been guarded, the woman might have lived.
