Auckland's harbour bridge woes prove we need to plan now for the super city's future..

A steel strut on the crossing was damaged when a freak gust of wind slammed a truck into it, almost a fortnight ago.

Auckland Business Chamber CEO Michael Barnett says it's something that's shown the fragility of the infrastructure.

He says the bridge is 60 years old -- so a long term alternative is needed.

According to a NZ Herald-Kantar Vote2020 poll, 80 per cent of Aucklanders surveyed want a tunnel as a second harbour crossing.

Sixty-six per cent would opt for a road and rail tunnel -- while 14 per cent want a light rail only.
