Lizzo urged people to stay "true to who you are" at the Billboard Music Awards on Wednesday (14.10.20)

The 'Good as Hell' hitmaker scooped the accolade for Top Song Sales Artist at the annual ceremony and used her acceptance speech to call on her fans to resist urges to change in order to fit in

Wearing an asymmetrical Christian Siriano gown with 'Vote' written all over it, she said: "I just want to say, thank you to Billboard, thank you to Atlantic, thank you to team Lizzo. Thank you to everyone who listens to my music and supported me.

"I just want to say, I've been thinking a lot about suppression and the voices that refuse to be suppressed.

"I wonder, would I be standing here right now if it weren't for the big Black women who refused to have their voices be suppressed? I just want to say... if you're at home watching this, you are thinking about changing yourself to feel worthy, this is your sign to remain true to who you are."

And the 32-year-old star went on to tell fans to "refuse to be supressed", insisting those who try and silence others are trying to get rid of their power.

She continued: "When people try to suppress something, it's normally because that thing holds power.

"They're afraid of your power. There's power in who you are. There's power in your voice. So whether it's through music, protests or your right to vote, use your power, use your voice and refuse to be suppressed.

"Thank you so much to Billboard. I love you all. God bless you all."
