Olivia Newton-John views having cancer as a "gift"

The 72-year-old actress was diagnosed with breast cancer for the third time in 2017 but she doesn't consider herself to be "sick" nor does she feel it is something she needs to "fight", though she's determined to feel as healthy as possible

She said: "I don’t think of myself as sick with cancer. I choose not to see it as a fight either because I don’t like war. I don’t like fighting wherever it is – whether it’s outside or an actual war inside my body.

" I choose not to see it that way. I want to get my body healthy and back in balance. Part of that is your mental attitude to it. If you think: ‘Poor me,’ or ‘I’m sick,’ then you’re going to be sick...

“I don’t know what I would be without it now. I see it as my life’s journey. It gave me purpose and intention and taught me a lot about compassion.

“It has been a gift. I don’t wish it on anyone else. But for me, it’s been important in my life.”

The 'Physical' hitmaker believes every day she is still alive is a "blessing" and she's grateful for however long she has left.

She told The Guardian newspaper: "Three times lucky, right? I’m going to look at it like that. Listen, I think every day is a blessing. You never know when your time is over; we all have a finite amount of time on this planet, and we just need to be grateful for that.”

Olivia - who is married to John Easterling and has daughter Chloe from her first marriage to Matt Lattanzi - was first diagnosed with the disease in 1992 and again in 2013, so when it returned again in 2017, she wasn't surprised.

She said: “It’s been a part of my life for so long. I felt something was wrong. It’s concerning when it comes back, but I thought: ‘I’ll get through it again.’”

The 'Grease' star is an advocate of medical cannabis for pain relief, but she was "nervous" before she first started using it.

She admitted: “I was nervous of it in the beginning. But I could see the benefits once I started using it. It helps with anxiety, it helps with sleep, it helps with pain.”
