Two gunmen who shot at a police officer in the Far North, remain on the loose

Two gunmen who shot at a police officer in the Far North, remain on the loose

Police are continuing to investigate the unprovoked attack on State Highway 11, near the Puketona Junction yesterday morning.

Two men got out of a vehicle with firearms and fired a shot which damaged the windscreen of the patrol car.

Police are trying to work out whether a kidnapping incident on Monday night is connected to the shooting.

A vehicle of interest to the kidnapping, a grey 2010 Nissan Skyline, was set alight on Puketotara Road near Okaihau yesterday morning.

They're still establishing if it's the same vehicle used in the shooting - which is described as a silver or grey sedan.

Neither the officer nor the kidnapping victim were hurt.
