The 116-kilometre queen stage has finished at the Coronet Peak ski field in recent years, but this year's edition will see the riders scale the Remarkables access road.
The stage originally had a shingle section at the top but the commissaires have deemed it unfit and shortened the ride.
Coronet Peak had an average gradient of 10 percent, however the Remarkables averages 16 percent with some parts hitting 25.
Aaron Gate holds the tour leader's yellow jersey with a six-second lead.
