Winds are starting to ease this morning, after gale southwesterlies hit parts of Southland and Otago last night

Yesterday's strong winds dropped a power line in Dunedin, which appeared to start a housefire in the suburb of Portobello.
MetService forecaster Heath Gullery says the winds reached up to 120 kilometres per hour.
He says the winds are moving east towards the Chatham Islands.
He says strong wind warnings are finishing.
