Police have today confirmed the death toll from the Whakaari White Island disaster has risen to 22

Police say 64-year-old Horst Westenfelder died in hospital overseas on July 2, of medical complications while being treated for injuries from the eruption.

His wife, Angelika , says her family's life has changed.

She says it's unbelievable how long her joyful and strong husband fought for his life.

Angelika says he is irreplaceable, and she will always miss him

The first anniversary of the Whakaari White Island disaster is less than two weeks away, on December 9.
