Concerns around burn offs for the Otago summer

Concerns around burn offs for the Otago summer

A NIWA report shows the region is headed for unusually dry weather.

Fire and Emergency have put Otago into a restricted fire season - meaning a permit is required to light a fire outdoors.

Fire and Emergency rural spokesperson Bruce Janes says the conditions are related to the arrival of a La Nina - a pattern bringing hot northeasterly winds for the south.

He says people can still have burn-offs, but they will require a permit to ensure they're done safely.
