People are being warned to stay out of the water at Tauranga's Memorial Park and surrounding areas

It follows a wastewater overflow from 6th Avenue yesterday.

The blockage was caused by a large towel and fat.

Tauranga City Council says the blockage has been cleared, but signs are up warning of potential risk as tests show elevated bacteria levels in the water.

The signs will remain until tests confirm the there's no health risk.
