Trevor Mallard's false rape claim about a Parliament staffer has cost taxpayers more than 333-thousand dollars to resolve.
Massey University politics professor Richard Shaw says because he's the Speaker, he's independent of the Government of the day.
He says opposition parties are trying to put the heat on, to draw a line between the Prime Minister and Mallard.
But he says Ardern is pushing back firmly, saying the Speaker's role is an independent constitutional position.
He's unclear where this matter will go -- because the Speaker is elected by all members of Parliament.
