The powerful category five storm is expected to hit Fiji this afternoon, bringing wind gusts up to 305 kilometres an hour, and 300 millimetres of heavy rain.
There are fears islands will be swamped and smaller ones wiped off the map.
Weather Watch forecaster Philip Duncan says the air pressure has now plummeted to 899 hectoPascals -- which is extremely serious.
He says it places the cyclone up there with some of the world's biggest hurricanes -- like Katrina, Rita and Cyclone Harold.
