A warning is in place for Fiordland and south Westland - with up to 100 millimetres of rain expected to fall.
A strong wind watch is also out for Fiordland and Southland, west of Invercargill.
The rest of the South Island will see breezy northwesterlies along the east coast and rain moving up the west coast.
Meteorologist Tahlia Crabtree says the North Island escapes it.
She says it's relatively cloudy - but by this afternoon the sun will be shining in most places.
