23-year-old Jake Bridson, of Heriot, died while diving near Owaka Heads in the Catlins.
A family member - understood to be his mother - posted online to say the family takes solace that he was doing what he loved.
In 2015, Bridson was hailed a hero after keeping a potentially disastrous scrub fire at bay near Otago's Clarks Junction.
He and two others loaded a spray tank on to a ute and used water from it to keep the fire contained.
