Corrections has shot down allegations of bullying at Waikeria Prison as inmates riot
30 December 2020
A third of the top-jail's capacity has been severely damaged by still-smouldering fires in the past 24-hours.
Seventeen inmates now have control over an entire prison wing -- while four people surrendered overnight.
It's believed the riot started over a lack of access to phones, but Corrections says it's received no formal complaints.
Chief Executive Jeremy Lightfood says he'd be surprised if rumours of bad behaviour from guards were true.
He says a recent inspectorate report acknowledged the sites performance and significant progress.
An operational review will be undertaken.
