Nicholls was in visible discomfort with a calf strain late on day two, but batted through to stumps.
A Black Caps spokesperson confirmed that Nicholls would have a net session this morning to determine his ability to bat, which he has since completed.
Nicholls will resume on 89 not out, with captain Kane Williamson unbeaten and the Black Caps 286 for three - 11 runs away from taking a first innings lead.
