Bay of Plenty Tourism says domestic visitor numbers were down 18 per cent in the week to 31 December, compared to the year before.
Chief executive Kristin Dunne says that's worse than expected and a bit disappointing ... despite numbers being better than normal ahead of the peak period.
She says there's been about 24-thousand domestic visitors a day.
Kristin Dunne says some Kiwis are probably exploring other parts of New Zealand while borders are still closed ... and the region's happy to share the love.
