High gas emissions in mid-December pushed the warning to Level 2, but this was dropped to 1 yesterday.
Department of Conservation Tongariro Operations Manager Connie Norgate says visitors must remain at least 700 metres from the crater lake, as the national park is an active volcanic area.

The last major eruption was in about 1995, when rocks were blasted 1.5 kilometres from the crater.
