Research from the New Zealand Medical Journal shows a quarter of hospital in-patients suffer infections which can lead to sepsis.
The average cost of a sepsis admission, is around 11 and a half thousand.
New Zealand Sepsis Trust member Dr Paul Huggan says this is of concern to the health system - particularly when infections are growing as a problem among elderly, and vulnerable populations.
He says while infection has always been a major cause of admission, healthcare workers are getting better at defining and naming it when they see it.
