The Regional Council says it was called to the harbour about two yesterday afternoon, after a diesel sheen was spotted and there was a smell.
A spokesperson says by the time staff arrived the source of the leak was patched up, and the diesel had dispersed too much to remove.
Staff are speaking with the vessel's owner and marina workers to find out how much spilled.
Locals are still seeing and smelling diesel in the harbour - and are asked to call the pollution hotline if any wildlife's in trouble.
