Firefighters were called to the fire outside Amberley on Friday afternoon as it spewed toxic black smoke.
A man in his 60s charged with arson was due to appear at Christchurch District Court today -- but has been granted a registrar's remand, so didn't have to appear before a judge.
He has been granted interim name suppression and will be back in court on February 23.
