World number one Ash Barty advances to Australian Tennis Open quarter-finals after beating Shelby Rogers

World number one and local hope Ash Barty has advanced to the Australian Tennis Open quarter-finals after beating Shelby Rogers in straight sets

Elsewhere, Rafael Nadal is now within three wins of a record 21st grand slam after defeating Fabio Fognini, also in straight sets.

New Zealand Cricket hopes to control its own destiny, despite another potential Covid-19 outbreak in the community.

The governing body has confirmed matches can still go ahead at alert level two behind closed doors, but not level three.

The Australian men and English women have arrived for tours, but are based in the South Island and won't travel north until next month.

India are in control after three days of the second cricket test against England in Chennai.

Local all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has made a fifth test century as part of the hosts' second innings of 286.

The visitors are 53 for three in reply, chasing 482 to win.

Organisers continue to plan for the national rowing championships to take place from Thursday to Saturday on Lake Ruataniwha, if the Covid-19 alert level two lockdown is removed.

The first two days have been cancelled.

Wellington Phoenix striker David Ball has been banned for two A-League football matches after his red card against the Central Coast Mariners on Sunday.

Basketball New Zealand could cop some unwelcome penalties from governing body FIBA should they withdraw from some international tournaments this year.

Chief executive Iain Potter admits the Tall Blacks, Tall Ferns and junior Tall Blacks may have to miss events due to the financial and logistical difficulties posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Potter says as a result, FIBA may punish them two-fold by barring them from other events.
