A man is in a coma after being attacked in his sleep by his cellmate at Manawatu Prison

A man is in a coma after being attacked in his sleep by his cellmate at Manawatu Prison

First time offender Bradley King was on remand awaiting sentencing for minor burglary charges.

The 36-year-old had only been in prison for 10 days before he was beaten so badly, he now requires major brain surgery.

King's twin sister Bridget says he's a gentle giant who desperately wanted to make amends for his actions, but now might not have the chance.

A Corrections spokesperson says the alleged perpetrator has been isolated, and an investigation is ongoing.
