About 70 per cent of New Zealand must be immunised against Covid-19, before restrictions can ease

That's the message from the Response Minister, after the start of our vaccination campaign on Saturday.
Chris Hipkins says reaching heard immunity depends on the vaccine's effectiveness.
He says if the vaccine's 90 per cent effective that's very helpful - but if it's 70 per cent everyone must be vaccinated to reach the target.
The Pfizer vaccine - which is being rolled out to at-risk border workers - is 90 to 95 per cent effective.
The general public will receive the Janssen, Novavax or AstraZeneca jab which are yet to be cleared by MedSafe.
