A woman has died at Auckland Region Women's Corrections Facility overnight

A woman has died at Auckland Region Women's Corrections Facility overnight

Prison staff found the woman unresponsive in her cell just before 4.30 this morning, while carrying out a welfare check.

Prison director Steve Parr says the death is not suspicious and appears to be from natural causes as a result of a pre-existing medical condition.

Parr says the Coroner will investigate and determine the cause of death.

There will also be an investigation by the independent Corrections Inspectorate.
