Researchers analysed sewage from seven sites across the country... over the same week as the 2018 national census.
The research, published in today's Drug and Alcohol Review, found overall nicotine consumption was similar to national sales data, and alcohol consumption was lower.
Those in the Bay of Plenty and Canterbury drank more alcohol and cigarettes than their Auckland counterparts.
It also found New Zealanders tended to drink more over the weekends -- especially in urban areas.
There was also more smoking happening in economically-deprived neighbourhoods.
