Fire crews have spent the night at the scene of a major building fire in Tuakau, south of Pukekohe

Fire crews have spent the night at the scene of a major building fire in Tuakau, south of Pukekohe

The blaze broke out in a three-storey industrial building just before 8.30 last night -- with 30 metre-high flames sending plumes of black smoke into the air.

It took 19 fire crews nearly four hours to bring the fire under control.

Two crews have remained at the scene overnight to monitor for hotspots, and a fire investigator is due at the scene this morning.

The building is understood to be a meat processing and animal by-product rendering plant.
